First, a quick search
Before anything else, spend five minutes on the places keys usually turn up:
- Jacket and bag pockets, including the ones you rarely use
- Between and under car seats, if the car is unlocked
- Where you last set down groceries, gym gear or a laptop bag
- The last store, restaurant or office you visited. Call them; lost keys often end up behind a counter
Find your VIN
Your Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character code. It helps identify the exact key your car needs. You can find it:
- Through the windshield, at the bottom corner on the driver’s side
- On a sticker in the driver’s door jamb
- On your registration and insurance card
Take a photo of it with your phone so you can read it out when you call or add it to your quote request.
Have proof of ownership ready
Making a key for a car with no key present is exactly the situation where a locksmith should check ownership. Have a photo ID and your registration or title available. If those papers are locked inside the car, tell us when you call.
No spare? Why it’s different when every key is gone
Ordinary key duplication, at a hardware counter, a self-service kiosk or elsewhere, starts from a key you already have: the blade is copied from the original, and on many cars an existing working key also makes adding a new one simpler. With no spare, there’s nothing to copy.
Instead, the new key has to be identified from your vehicle’s information, cut to fit and then programmed so the car will start with it. It takes more steps, which is why we ask a few more questions up front.
If your only key snapped rather than went missing, keep both pieces; even a broken key can help. If part of it is stuck in the ignition, see broken key in the ignition.
Once you’re back on the road, a second key is the simplest way to avoid going through this again. See spare car keys.
If the car is somewhere inconvenient
Garages, work lots and apartment complexes are all common. Let us know the address, the level or spot number and any gate or access details. Our Kirkland service area page has more tips for a smooth visit.
